Step entry of MIDI data is an alternative method of entering MIDI arrangements. In step editing, you set the length of notes, and the transport is automatically moved forward each time you play a note (or chord) on the keyboard. This is a fast way to enter a long sequence of chord progressions or a drum pattern. Or it can be helpful for users that are not proficient in keyboard performance, but would like to enter notes using the keyboard.

To initiate step entry, right-click on the track’s “REC” button. A keyboard will be displayed.

Use your externally-connected keyboard to enter notes and chords; the step-entry dialog will automatically advance the playhead with each event. This is a fast way to enter a chord progression or drum parts.
