Normalize Region

Normalizing audio is a method to automatically adjust the gain control(s) to meet a target volume level.

You may normalize an audio region in the timeline, or you may normalize the final output during Export (see: Export)

The “Normalize Regions” dialog can be launched in one of 2 ways:

• use the menu item Region->Gain->Normalize (or the associated shortcut)
• right-click on a Region and choosing “{Region name}/gain/Normalize…”
  

The operation will be applied to all selected regions.

*TIP: You can use Ctrl+A (or Cmd+A on Mac) to select ALL regions in the timeline at one time. This is sometimes useful if you import tracks with widely varying levels.

There is an option to normalize the regions to meet a peak, RMS, or LFS value.

• Peak: adjusts the region’s gain so their maximum digital peak value meets the defined value
• RMS: adjust the region’s gain so their short-term RMS value meets the target value
• LFS: adjusts the regions gain so their long-term loudness meets the target value
  

There’s also an option to normalize each region separately, or to calculate the gain correction for all regions and apply only the max value calculated across all the regions. This is important if, for example, you have a pair of tracks representing a stereo source and you want to have the same gain applied to both tracks so the stereo balance doesn’t shift.
