What is Ripple Editing?

A “Ripple” edit means that any changes you make on the timeline should be reflected in a change to the regions ‘later’ (to the right) on the timeline.

For example if you delete a cough or ‘ummm’ from a voiceover, you might want the later regions to move ‘left’ to close the gap that was originally filled with the cough or ‘ummmm’.

Ripple editing is rarely used in a music project (except perhaps to remove the pauses between complete songs).

What operations are affected by Ripple?

  • If you select a time-range with the Range tool and Delete (or Cut) that range, then the events to the right will ‘ripple’ leftwards to close the gap
  • If you select a Region, dragging the region left or right will ‘ripple move’ the regions to the right by the same amount

Types of Ripple Editing

When you select “Ripple” in the Edit Mode menu, an additional menu appears which allows you to select one of 3 options for rippling:

  • Selected: in this mode, the selected tracks will respond to the ripple edit, when possible
  • All: in this mode, your Range and Region selections are always applied to ALL tracks, and any timeline deletions or moves will also be reflected in the ruler markers
  • Interview: in this mode, intended for use when 2 or more people are conducting a chat or interview, you can cut one track without it rippling (for example, to remove a cough from one guest). But if you select more than one track, Mixbus assumes you want to cut out that time on the other tracks as well. In this mode the ruler markers do not ripple.
