One of the benefits of immersive mixing is the additional space available for panning. Sounds are no longer limited to just left/right panning, but have full 3d position (left/right, front/back, and up/down) in the listening space.
Additionally, a sound can be automated to move around the space dynamically. When used sensibly, this can introduce a heightened sense of drama in your mix. For example: introducing a new instrument by ‘flying it in’ from the back to the front, is a dramatic way to transition from a verse to a chorus.
An object has 5 individually automatable controls: X position, Y position, Z position, Size, and Snap. For a stereo channel, this doubles to 10 automatable controls.
But don’t worry, Mixbus makes it easy to manage these controls in the editor.
Automating 6 parameters at once:
For this demo, you should first enable the option in the main menu: Edit -> Show Automation Lane on Touch
Now, engage the “Touch” menu from the automation pulldown below the object panner. This will arm the objects to write automation when you click on them. The panner joystick can simultaneously “touch” and write the X, Y, and Z position of an object. In a stereo channel the automation works for both channels, simultaneously.
When you click in the panner, you’ll immediately see 6 automation lanes appear, and start writing simultaneously, as shown below:
